Ilkal sarees take their name from the town of Ilkal in the present-day Bagalkot District of Karnataka.

The weaving tradition dates back to the 8th century, during the Chalukya dynasty. Weaving later flourished under other dynasties, including the Rashtrakutas, the Vijayanagara Empire, and other rulers.

Unlike many silk sarees woven entirely from a single continuous warp, Ilkal sarees are woven with a distinctive method of joining the body with pallu. This hallmark remains unique to this day.

Why are Ilkal Sarees so famous?

1. The Tope Teni Technique - The most distinctive feature is the Tope Teni technique. Here, the body and pallu are woven separately and then locked manually together on the loom through a meticulous loop-interlocking structure.

2. Pallu - The pallu usually features three solid stripes, alternating white bands. This bold striped pallu immediately identifies an Ilkal saree.

3. Borders - Chikki paras, Gayatri and many others

3. Silk-Cotton - The most famous combination. The saree is woven as a cotton body with silk pallu and border.

Styling an Ilkal Saree

Ilkal sarees were typically worn with Khun blouses, which is also a GI-Tag textile.

Kasuti embroidery (which also has a GI-Tag) is also done on Ilkal sarees, which gives all of us a reason to own not one saree but many more.

Tucked away in the town of Molakalmuru in Chitradurga district is an extraordinary weaving tradition that deserves recognition. Known for its distinctive 9-inch-wide zari borders, it features temple-inspired geometric borders and traditional motifs such as peacocks, elephants, and swans. With its lightweight silk, the Molakalmuru saree is a masterpiece, woven for generations.

Molakalmuru has long been recognised as one of Karnataka’s important handloom weaves. History talks about the region’s weaving heritage from the Vijayanagara period, when the South of India witnessed remarkable advancements in textiles.

What makes it special to me?

It’s not easy to find shops where one can find Molakalmuru sarees readily available for purchase. I literally had to search for authentic weavers who could provide silk marks and weave a customised saree for me. Luckily, I could get one!

GI-Tag

The weaving process is labour-intensive. Depending on the complexity of the design, a single saree may take several days or even weeks to complete. As demand for sarees increased and the supply decreased, imitation sarees began appearing in the market, which resembled genuine Molakalmuru sarees but lacked their craftsmanship and authenticity. To safeguard this regional heritage and ensure that imitations were not allowed, the Molakalmuru Saree was granted GI-Tag during 2007–08.

How much does a Molakalmuru saree cost?

The price depends on factors, including silk quality, zari and weaving time, to name a few. Typical pricing:

• Simple handwoven silk: ₹8,000–₹15,000

• Traditional zari designs: ₹15,000–₹30,000

• Bridal zari sarees: ₹30,000–₹60,000

• Exclusive master-piece creations: ₹60,000–₹1,00,000

The story of the Banarasi saree stretches back further than most people expect — some historians trace silk weaving on the banks of the Ganga at Kashi itself, while others point to weavers from further south, even Kanchipuram, who settled in Varanasi during Emperor Akbar’s reign and brought their own silk expertise along with them.

Whatever the exact route, the outcome was the same: Varanasi became a city where gold and silver zari threads were worked into silk with a precision that, at first, made these sarees fit only for royalty.

For me, though, the story began somewhere much smaller. I was in grade 1, playing Lata Mangeshkar in a school performance, singing “Mile Sur Mera Tumhara,” and draped in my grandmother’s Banarasi saree for the occasion. I don’t remember much about the performance itself, but I remember exactly how that saree felt — and looking back, I think that’s the moment the obsession quietly started, years before I understood a word of what made a Banarasi a Banarasi.

What Makes It Special

What sets a Banarasi apart isn’t just the silk — it’s the craftsmanship packed into it. These sarees are woven using a weft technique, which means the motifs are built into the fabric as it’s woven, thread by thread. Depending on how intricate the design is, a single saree can take anywhere from 15 days to several months to come off the handloom.

The Types of Banarasi Silk and Sarees

Not all Banarasi sarees are cut from the same fabric. The fabric base alone varies quite a bit: Katan Silk, Organza/Kora, Georgette, Tissue, Shattir, to name a few.

Beyond the base fabric, it’s the weaving technique where a Banarasi earns its personality — Katan Banarasi, Organza Banarasi, Shattir Banarasi, Georgette Banarasi, Kadhwa, Cutwork, Kadhiyal, Tanchoi, Meenakari, among others.

The Patterns: Jaal and Others

If there’s one design word every Banarasi lover should know, it’s Jaal — literally “net” — a design where a small motif called a booti is enclosed within a network of geometric or curvilinear lines that spread across the entire body of the saree. Beyond the Jaal, keep an eye out for Shikargah, Kalga and Bel, Jhallar, and the recurring cast of paisleys, peacocks, and elephants.

When Did It Get Its GI Tag?

The Banarasi saree — officially registered as “Banaras Brocades and Sarees” — received its GI tag on September 4, 2009, following an application filed in 2007 by nine organisations, led by the Banaras Bunkar Samiti and the Human Welfare Association. The tag protects weavers in Uttar Pradesh from having sarees produced elsewhere - sold under the “Banarasi” name- and it directly benefits the roughly 12 lakh people connected to the region’s handloom silk industry. A logo version of the same GI registration followed in 2012–13, adding a visual mark of authenticity that’s even harder to fake.

Price Range

Prices swing enormously depending on the silk base, the weaving technique, and how much handwork went into the motifs:

• Entry-level authentic Banarasi: roughly ₹4,000–₹8,000

• Mid-range Katan or Organza with moderate zari work: ₹8,000–₹25,000

• Heavily worked Kadhwa, Tanchoi, or bridal-grade pieces: ₹25,000–₹80,000, and upward for true heirloom-quality weaves

As a rule of thumb: if a “pure Banarasi silk saree” is being offered for a couple of thousands, it’s very likely a power-loom imitation rather than the real, handwoven thing.

When in doubt, ask for the Silk Mark tag or GI authentication — a shop confident in what it’s selling won’t hesitate to show you.

There’s a particular kind of silk that South Indian households have quietly trusted for generations — the kind you inherit, gift, and eventually pass down. That’s KSIC Mysore Silk. Every genuine Mysore silk saree also carries a unique code number and hologram stitched in as an authenticity mark, a safeguard against various imitations that circulate under the “Mysore silk” name.

The Demand: Why People Are Lining Up Before Dawn

If you thought queuing for a new phone launch was intense, KSIC showrooms have recently given that a run for its money. Multiple reports over the past year describe crowds forming outside KSIC outlets well before opening time.

In Bengaluru, a video that went viral showed women queuing from as early as 4 AM outside a KSIC showroom, with buyers restricted to one saree each and required to hold a token just to enter. The rush was tied to a widening gap between demand and the limited supply of authentic, GI-tagged Mysore Silk. This is because the production is entirely dependent on a small pool of highly skilled and trained in-house weavers, and training a new artisan reportedly takes six to seven months, so output simply cannot scale up quickly.

Mysore Silk’s understated elegance means it doesn’t need to compete for attention — it’s often the blouse and jewellery that do the talking.

• Blouse: Because Mysore Silk sarees are usually woven in a single solid or subtly shaded colour with a zari border, a contrasting or richly embroidered blouse works beautifully.

• Occasion cues: For weddings, festivals, and pujas, layering multiple gold necklaces of varying lengths works well.

Somewhere in the last 6-7 years, that started to shift. I found myself reaching for a saree more often — for family functions, festivals, weddings, the occasions that called for something more. And the more I wore them, the more their grace and quiet elegance grew on me. What began as an occasional choice slowly turned into a real interest.

India’s handloom traditions are staggeringly diverse — nearly every state has a saree language of its own. Growing up in the South, Mysore Silk (KSIC) and Kanchipuram silk were the two I knew best. Mysore Silk sarees are prized for being light and effortlessly elegant; Kanchipuram sarees, for their richness, craftsmanship, and sheer grandeur. I loved both, but found myself wanting something in between — a silk saree with the elegance of Kanchipuram, the comfort of Mysore Silk, moderate in weight, and easy enough to drape.

That search became a doorway into a much bigger world of Indian handloom traditions — and it’s where I first ran into the idea of the Geographical Indication (GI) tag: an official recognition the Government of India grants to products whose quality, character, or reputation is tied to a specific place. For handloom textiles specifically, a GI tag does real work — it protects traditional weaving techniques, safeguards the livelihoods of the artisan communities who actually practice them, and gives buyers a guarantee that what they’re holding was genuinely woven where it claims to be from.

A great example of this in action is Patan Patola from Gujarat. The Economic Times reported that the GI tag awarded to Patan’s Patola weavers was meant to protect their centuries-old double-ikat weaving technique and give them legal recourse against cheap imitations sold under the Patola name.
